Hace aproximadamente dos meses, entré a formar parte del particular banco de sangre del barco. En donde nosotros, la tripulación, somos los principales donadores de sangre para las cirugías que se llevan a cabo en el hospital.
El paciente para el que originalmente doné mi sangre, terminó por no necesitarla, por lo que creí que, cuando finalmente utilizaran la primera donación de sangre de mi vida, no tendría oportunidad de saber quién fue el recipiente.
Sin embargo, hace dos semanas recibí la noticia de que mi sangre, junto con la de otras 7 personas, había servido para salvar la vida de una paciente de cirugía maxilofacial.
Hasanatu viene del interior de la república de Guinea, el inmenso tamaño de su tumor facial, hizo su caso una prioridad cuando en noviembre el equipo de escaneo médico recorrió el interior del país en busca de pacientes.
En diciembre, la familia de Hasanatu la acompaño a subir a un camión que la traería hasta Conakry. Sin embargo, no pudo llegar al país antes de que el hospital cerrara debido a las vacaciones. Así que durante navidad y año nuevo Hasanatu espero pacientemente en el "Hope Centre" o centro de pre y post operaciones.
Durante este tiempo, tuve la oportunidad de pasar largas horas sentada al lado de ella. No decíamos mucho, pero el estar juntas parecía alegrarnos mutuamente.
Finalmente el 6 de enero, después de días interminables (para ella que los contaba uno por uno) Hasanatu ingresó al "Africa Mercy" y fue operada. Fue una cirugía complicada que requirió una segunda visita al cuarto de operaciones para hacer reparaciones, pero el tumor fue correctamente extraído y su cara volvió a lucir sana.
El saber que parte de mí contribuyó a curarla me llena de alegría, agradezco el regalo de tener vida y poder compartirla a mi vez y espero que pronto, muy pronto, Hasanatu pueda regresar con su familia y compartir la alegría de una nueva vida con ellos.

About two months ago I came to be part of the very particular Blood Bank onboard the ship. In which us, the crew members, are the main blood donors for the surgeries in the hospital.
The patient who was originally meant to get my blood did not need it at the end, and I thought I would never know who got my first blood donation ever.
However, two weeks ago I found out that my blood, together with that of 7 other people, had been used to save a MaxFax patient.
Hasanatu comes from rural Guinea, the huge size of her tumor made her a priority case when the Upcountry Screening team searched the inside of Guinea for patients.
In December, Hasanatu’s family took her to a bus that would get her to Conakry. However, she did not reach the city before the hospital closed for Holiday season. So during Christmas and New Year Hasanatu waited patiently in the Hope Centre.
During that time, I had the chance to spend a lot of time sitting beside her. We did not say much, but just being together seemed to make both of us happy.
Finally on January 6th, after unending days (for Hasanatu, who counted them one by one) she boarded the “Africa Mercy” and had her surgery. It was a complicated surgery which required a second OR visit for repairs, but the tumor was correctly taken away and her face was once again healthy.
Knowing that part of me contributed to making her better fills me with joy, I am grateful for the gift of life and for being able to share that gift and I hope that soon, very soon, Hasanatu will be able to go back to her family and share the joy of a new life with them.
