Cambios

Por fin algo nuevo que contar... algo emocionante, para mí bastante…para ustedes… quién sabe. Mi trabajo en el barco ha cambiado, ahora me encuentro participando en varios aspectos verdaderamente únicos de la vida en un navío.

De servir únicamente a la tripulación,  he pasado a servir a todo el personal que entra y sale del barco, así como a aquellos que, desde afuera, buscan contactar a alguien adentro.

La recepción forma parte del departamento de cubierta y mi nuevo trabajo se encuentra estrechamente ligado con los oficiales y los marinos.

La parte más importante de mi trabajo consiste en monitorear el sistema contra incendios y el teléfono de emergencias. Es decir, estar atenta TODO el tiempo a pre-alarmas o alarmas que se hayan activado alrededor del barco, así como tomar acción después de recibir alguna de estas alarmas o llamadas de emergencia.

El entrenamiento para este trabajo es bastante divertido, el oficial de seguridad activa diferentes alarmas alrededor del barco y yo debo responder como si se tratara de una verdadera emergencia.

El trabajo es diferente, muy diferente a aquel que tenía antes…ahora tengo diferentes turnos, ya sea en la mañana, en la tarde o en la noche, pues, claro, alguien debe de estar tras el escritorio las 24 horas al día los 7 días de la semana; así que también trabajo algunos fines de semana.

Ahora puedo estar al corriente de muchos de los aspectos de una vida en barco que antes me era desconocida. Recibo a los nuevos miembros de la tripulación, veo pacientes entrar y salir, respondo a las llamadas telefónicas fuera o dentro del barco, monitoreo el uso de las camionetas y claro... me queda mucho tiempo para observar la vida y encontrar inspiración para describirla.

Ante este cambio de horarios, a veces me encuentro deambulando por el barco ante la incertidumbre de qué hacer mientras todo el mundo está trabajando. Observo a los doctores, a las enfermeras, a los encargados de la limpieza y a todos aquellos que contribuyen, durante la noche, para que la vida dentro de esta pequeña ciudad flotante, fluya sin problemas.

Así pues, junto con el nuevo trabajo, he encontrado una nueva perspectiva, he encontrado cosas emocionantes y al mismo tiempo, el espacio y la oportunidad que necesito de reflexionar y dejar mis pensamientos fluir una vez más.

At last something new to tell… something very exciting for me. Mi job inside the ship has changed, now I am involved in many aspects unique to life on board a vessel.

From serving the crew only, I have gone to serving all the people who go in and out of the ship, as well as the people who, from the outside, want to contact somebody on the inside.

Reception is part of the Deck department and my new job is closely tied to that of officers and seamen.

The most important part of this new job is manning the fire panel and the 911 phone. That is to say, watch out ALL the time for pre-alarms or alarms that have gone off around the ship, and take action after getting these or an emergency phone call.

The training for this job is quite fun, the safety officer activates various alarms around the ship and I have to answer as if a real emergency were taking place.

The work to be done is different, very different to the one I had to do before. Now I have different shifts, either morning, evening or nights, because of course somebody has to be behind the desk 24/7; so I work weekend too.

Now I can know about a lot ship-life aspects that used to be unknown to me. I greet the new crew-members, I see patients come in and out, I answer phone calls from inside or outside the ship, I monitor the use of the land rovers and of course… I still have a lot of time to observe life and find inspiration to describe it.

Faced by this schedule change, I sometimes find myself walking around the ship with no particular purpose, wondering what to do while the rest of the people are working. I watch the doctors, the nurses, the stewards, and all of those who contribute, during the night, so that life in this small floating city, can continue without problems.

And so, along with the new job, I have found a new perspective, I have found exciting things, and at the same time, the space and the opportunity I need to think and let my thoughts flow once more.
